Operable
Liquor Shelving
Designed by Basile Studio
These massive 30" wide liquor shelves will be featured in the heart of Little Italy in Downtown San Diego. They use a linear actuator to lower and raise backlit liquor bottles for bartenders' use in a beautiful display that is both functional and aesthetic. The metal is hot-rolled steel with a black wax finish and the shelf uses dotless LEDs through a custom perforated formed channel to backlight the bottles.

CAD Model
The CAD model is vital in calculating necessary effort force to lift the cantilevered liquor weight as well as locate the exact placement of the motor mounts to ensure the built-in limit switches of the linear actuator brings the shelving arm to the vertical and horizontal positions. Full shop drawings were delivered to the floor including a nested CNC cut file and complete Bill of Materials.
Prototype
Prototyping is a useful tool for engineers to visualize the effectiveness of a given design as well as troubleshoot any potential roadblocks before completing the project. For this project there will be seven mechatronic shelving units lined up above the bar and this was the first working model.
