Square Ceiling Cladding

Designed by Basile Studio

This unique ceiling detail is made out of rough-sawn dark Redwood lumber. Each square is removable and is lined with individually addressable RGB LED strips. The light is shown through an aluminum grate diffuser both above and below with a mylar sheet preventing light from escaping through the top.

Prototype

This prototype helped confirm the light effect from the LEDS through the aluminum grate. For the prototype, 3/4" ACX plywood was used to hold the grates and LED strip in place. The actual model would be made from Red Wood lumber.

CAD

The CAD model allowed the set dimensions of the room, aluminum grate, and the rough sawn Redwood lumber to calculate the square size pattern. A prototype was created to test the visual effect of the LED strip through the diffuser. Using individually addressable LEDs will allow the entire grid of strips to run patterns throughout the ceiling. One of the ideas is to play a real life game of Snake throughout the panels. Each panel is removable to perform maintenance to each square and can be connected using a quick-connect.
